In a curious case, students who participated in the Postgraduate Anesthesiology Examination (Paper 1) conducted by two different public medical universities – Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, – ended up answering the same paper question.

The RGUHS had conducted the Anesthesiology exam (Test 1) on May 7, while the Dr. NTR University test was May 12. There was no difference between the two tests. The two universities had set 10 essay-style questions for a maximum of 100 points in the three-hour paper.

Among the questions posed were: Discuss neuromuscular transmission using a diagram; write a note on physiological changes during hypothermia; discuss the pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic and its usefulness; discuss the application of gas laws in anesthesia; Laryngeal mask airway devices, types and their uses; Elimination of Hoffmann; compare the pharmacological effects of fentanyl morphine; hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction; caudal epidural space; and write a note on Horace’s wells.

However, both universities claimed that it happened accidentally. “There is no exam fraud or illegal gain for any student,” authorities said. ‘

When contacted, Dr. K. Shankar, Registrar of NTR Health Sciences University, said, “The paper setter is common to both universities and they gave the same question paper. It is accidental and there is no problem. We distributed to the students one set of papers among the six that they had given us. There is no advantage or gain for the students.”

“We will take a necessary precaution for the next examination and it will not be repeated. Also, we will advise paper writers not to give the same question papers to all universities,” he added.

On the other hand, RGUHS Vice Chancellor MK Ramesh said, “The questioner made a mistake. We randomly choose a questioner across the country. These people accidentally gave the same questionnaire for both universities. It is accidental, and there is no problem for the students.”
